Tealium Review

Enterprise customer data platform with real-time data orchestration and AI

Personalization & CDP · Enterprise

Overview

Tealium is an independent enterprise Customer Data Platform (CDP) built around the Tealium Customer Data Hub, a suite of integrated products covering tag management, real-time data collection, audience building, and API-driven data access. Founded in 2008 and still independent (not acquired by a larger platform), Tealium has carved out a position as the CDP for heavily regulated industries (healthcare, financial services, insurance) where data governance and vendor neutrality are hard requirements. The Customer Data Hub consists of four core products. Tealium iQ is tag management, the product that started the company. Tealium EventStream handles real-time event collection and routing via an API hub. Tealium AudienceStream does real-time audience segmentation and profile building with trait-based rules and machine learning enrichment. Tealium DataAccess provides raw event-level data export for data warehouses, data lakes, and BI tools. All four products share a common data layer built on Tealium's Universal Data Hub architecture, which normalizes data from any source into a consistent visitor/event model before routing to destinations. Key enterprise features include real-time data collection at scale (billions of events/day across major enterprise deployments), vendor-neutral integration (since Tealium is not owned by a cloud provider or marketing platform, it has no incentive to favor specific destinations), data governance with consent management, data privacy controls, and audit logging built into the collection pipeline, and server-side data control that keeps sensitive data off the browser entirely. Tealium supports over 1,300 turnkey integrations and offers a flexible data layer that can feed both marketing activation tools (email, advertising, personalization) and analytical systems (Databricks, Snowflake, Power BI). Tealium's pricing is enterprise-tier, with annual contracts typically starting in the $50K-$150K+ range depending on event volume, products selected, and add-ons. It competes with Twilio Segment (developer-first, more connectors), Bloomreach (commerce-focused CDP), and mParticle (engineering-led, mobile-first). Tealium's win scenario is the regulated enterprise (insurance, banking, pharma) that needs a neutral CDP with strong data governance, a tag management heritage, and the ability to feed data into both marketing and analytical systems without vendor lock-in.

Review notes

Researched from public documentation, the source repository, and vendor materials. Not a hands-on test.

Tealium is the enterprise tag management and customer data platform: a universal data layer, tag management across hundreds of vendors, and a real-time CDP layer for identity and audiences. Its durability is the tag management engine, which remains the backbone of many enterprise tracking stacks, and the CDP features have matured around real-time identity and consent. It is the safer, more rigorous pick in the CDP category versus developer-first Segment.

The cost and complexity are enterprise-scale: implementation projects, dedicated data-ops staff, and annual contracts that mean you buy the platform, not the features. The consent management integration is a genuine strength for privacy-regulated brands.

Verdict

Best for enterprises that need governed, consent-aware data plumbing at scale. Warehouse-native CDP approaches are cheaper where identity needs are simpler.
