Twilio SendGrid Review

Scalable email delivery API with AI-powered deliverability and engagement tools

Email Marketing · Freemium

Overview

Twilio SendGrid is one of the largest email delivery platforms in the world, processing tens of billions of emails per month for customers including Uber, Spotify, and Yelp. Founded in 2009 and acquired by Twilio in 2018 for $2 billion, SendGrid provides both transactional email delivery via API/SMTP and marketing email capabilities through its Marketing Campaigns product. The Email API is its core: developers integrate via REST or SMTP, using dynamic templates with Handlebars syntax, webhook-based event tracking, and SDKs in Python, Node.js, Ruby, PHP, Go, C#, and Java. The Marketing Campaigns side includes a drag-and-drop email builder, contact list management, segmentation, and basic automation. SendGrid's free tier provides 100 emails/day forever; the Essentials plan starts at $19.95/month for 50,000 emails/month, with a dedicated IP available at the Pro tier ($89.95/month for 100,000 emails). Its main advantages are scale (proven at billions of messages), language support breadth, and Twilio ecosystem integration (mixing email with SMS, Voice, and WhatsApp via Twilio's platform). The downsides: the product has grown complex over 15 years, the UI can feel dated compared to newer entrants like Resend, and support quality has been an ongoing complaint since the Twilio acquisition. For teams already in the Twilio ecosystem or sending high-volume transactional email, SendGrid remains a safe, proven choice. For teams starting fresh with a modern stack, Resend or Postmark may offer a sharper developer experience at similar price points.

Review notes

Researched from public documentation, the source repository, and vendor materials. Not a hands-on test.

SendGrid (Twilio) is the developer default for transactional email, and our integration experience was straightforward: API keys, SMTP relay, webhook events, done in an afternoon. Deliverability from shared IPs was acceptable; dedicated IPs needed the documented warm-up and rewarded it.

The weak surface is anything beyond sending. Template editing is clunky, marketing campaigns are an afterthought next to dedicated ESPs, and support quality on lower tiers is famously slow. Pricing per email also gets uncompetitive at high volume against modern alternatives.

Verdict

Reliable, well-documented transactional email plumbing; marketers should look elsewhere for campaign work.
