Customer.io Review
Data-driven messaging platform for automated email, push, SMS, and in-app messages
Email Marketing · From $100/mo
Overview
Customer.io is a behavior-driven messaging platform for product and lifecycle teams: it stores people, objects, and events, then runs cross-channel journeys that react to what those people do. Founded in 2012 and headquartered in Portland, Oregon, it serves more than 9,000 brands and competes with Braze, Iterable, and OneSignal on event-triggered automation rather than list blasts. Data arrives through the Track and Data Pipelines APIs, SDKs for iOS, Android, React Native, Flutter, and JavaScript, or a warehouse path with reverse ETL; profiles can be tied to objects such as accounts or carts, with two object types on Essentials and ten on Premium. Journeys, the visual workflow builder, then trigger email, transactional email, push, in-app, SMS, native WhatsApp, LINE, and two-way webhooks, with anonymous messaging on higher tiers. The AI surface is where the product has moved most. An AI Agent, currently in beta, ships with execution skills on every plan: it can build segments, answer questions about your data, and run scheduled tasks called Routines, weekly on Essentials and daily on Premium. Journeys support LLM actions, the pricing page lists send-time optimization, and the docs cover email content analysis plus in-app message and survey suggestions. Customer.io also publishes an MCP server with setup guides for ChatGPT, Claude Desktop, Cursor, and Claude Code, along with a CLI and agent skill, so assistants can query the same platform your campaigns run on. Pricing is published rather than quoted: Essentials starts at $100/month billed monthly for 5,000 profiles and 1 million emails, Premium at $1,000/month billed yearly with custom volume, Enterprise by negotiation. Overages run $0.009 per profile, $0.12 per additional 1,000 emails, and $10 per 100,000 AI credits, and seats are unlimited on every plan. Startups that have raised under $10M get twelve months free. The trade-off is unchanged: it rewards teams with an event pipeline, and asks more instrumentation work than a CSV-upload email tool.

How to install
- Sign up at fly.customer.io/signup and pick a US or EU data center at account creation; the pricing FAQ states data storage carries no extra charge.
- Send identity and event data with the Track API or an SDK for iOS, Android, React Native, Flutter, or JavaScript, or route it through Data Pipelines, which also writes to downstream destinations.
- Relate people to objects such as accounts or carts if you need account-level journeys; Essentials includes 2 object types, Premium 10.
- Build journeys in the visual workflow builder, then add channels: email, push, in-app, SMS, native WhatsApp, LINE, and webhooks that send and receive.
- If you want agent access, follow the docs' MCP setup guides for ChatGPT, Claude Desktop, Cursor, or the Claude Code plugin, or use the CLI with a service account.
Best for
Product-led SaaS and e-commerce teams that already track user events server-side and want email, push, in-app, SMS, and WhatsApp driven by those events, with unlimited seats and a published price list.
Not for
Non-technical teams that want to upload a CSV and send a newsletter with no instrumentation, and anyone needing metered SMS at a published rate, since SMS volume is custom-quoted on every plan.
Review notes
Customer.io is the developer-leaning lifecycle platform. The data model is event-first: you send events and attributes, and journeys react to them, which is why product-led companies with instrumentation in place get the most out of it. Almost everything on the pricing table, from the AI Agent to the channel list, assumes a working data connection, and the docs lead with SDKs and the Track API rather than a CSV importer. Assessed from the published pricing and documentation; we do not hold a Customer.io account.
The AI work is documented rather than implied. The AI docs section runs 22 pages and covers an AI Agent with segment building and custom skills, Routines for scheduled tasks, a CLI with a service-account model, and an MCP server with per-client setup guides for ChatGPT, Claude, Cursor, and Claude Code. The pricing page marks the agent beta; the docs index does not carry beta labels, so the boundary between beta and shipped is worth confirming in a trial.
Pricing is one of the few enterprise messaging platforms that publishes numbers, and the structure is legible: profile volume, email volume, and object types drive the tiers, with unlimited push, in-app, and webhooks throughout and AI credits metered separately at $10 per 100,000. Three things are easy to miss: SMS is custom-quoted on every plan including Essentials, anonymous messaging starts at Premium, and the twelve-month startup program requires having raised under $10M.
Verdict
Best fit: product-led SaaS teams with an event pipeline that want lifecycle messaging their own agents can operate. Published pricing plus a real MCP and CLI surface make it unusually easy to evaluate from the docs alone.
