Customer Journey Mapping

GLOSSARY

Definition

A customer journey map is a visual representation of every step a customer takes from first awareness to purchase and beyond. It documents touchpoints, emotions, pain points, and the channels involved at each stage. The goal is to find where the experience breaks down.

Why it matters

Journey mapping sounds straightforward and is, in practice, where most marketing teams discover they don't actually know what their customers do. The maps that work are built from data — analytics paths, support ticket themes, sales call transcripts — not from a workshop where everyone's opinion gets equal weight. The AI tools entering this space are good at assembling the data. The interpretation still needs a human who's willing to be wrong.
